Lead by example
“Lead by example, not because you feel like it’s what you should do. But because it is your way of life.”- is the advice I today pass on to you.
My name is Kenneth Joseph Johnson #87994-071 and I’m presently serving a life without parole, plus 30 year sentence for a non-violent drug offense. For many years of my life, I convince myself that I was this exceedingly great leader. When in reality, I was just another follower of peer pressure (The “it” crowd), leading those within my sphere of influence down a road of short-term gratification, followed by a long term of grievous circumstances.
Wanting to fit in, be liked and looked up to, at a young age of 14, I started to disregard pretty much everything my single mom had to say. Which led to me experiencing alcohol and drugs, then eventually progressing to petty crimes, then finally to hanging out on the block selling drugs. Clearly, this willingly was subjecting myself to following what I knew was wrong, has led me serving four (4) prison terms for selling drugs. This equates to over 25 years of my life in prison. Nine (9) years ago I mustered up the courage to stop following that which was circumscribing me and others’ lives.
And I surrendered to something all knowing and powerful indwelling (The Spirit of God) and obediently allowed it to guide me. I began being honest with myself and others, being responsible and trustworthy, plus being accountable for all my actions. Today I live my life as if it’s being viewed on a big screen for all to see. Resulting in my now positive lifestyle being a great example for others. By no means do, I claim to have it all together, with all the answers. I’m a work-in-progress, living to be better than I was the previous day. No longer contributing to the problems of our state of existence, but now live with deep passion to continuously contribute to the solutions that will free us from our mental and physical oppression.
I believe those of us that hurt the most, must do the most to free ourselves from mental and physical oppression. Therefore, today I challenge you to be courageous and incorporate virtue into your life. And allow it to take over and be the driving force of your existence. Which will ultimately equip you to begin to- “Lead by example, not because you feel like it’s what you should do. But because it is your way of life.” In which will equip you to start sowing seeds that will reap all of us a better tomorrow.
