The other day an old friend of mine from my high school days wrote me a letter , In that letter he ask me. ” What is prison like” ? In truth this is a broad and ambiguous question. Its impossible question to answer in a short forum.
Each individual can only describe what they experience.
My first year was extremely difficult, I went from living a dream in Ecuador, To living a nightmare in a 8 X 10 cell.
As human beings we can adapt to new environment relatively quickly. Prison like war you must experience for yourself to understand it. I compartmentalize my life in three areas, Physical, emotional and psychological. By triangulating my time; First in my housing unit where I sleep watch a little T.V and facilitate classes. Second My work in education; I work as a Law clerk helping inmates navigate the system and my study time.Third My recreation, I work out 5 days a week doing strength training and three days a week cardio, I play tennis everyday of the week..
The days that I feel lethargic are the days I push myself the hardest, Just like you ,I have days that are Joyful, happy, grateful, appreciative. I also have days that I am sad and regretful, Just because I am here, no-one can ever take away the fountain of ebullience I have for life. I will always be my phlegmatic self,no matter what happens to me.
In this place you have to be transcendentally resourceful and have your true loyal acolytes close. No matter where your at in life you must work with what you have. The best way I can describe prison is Imagine your life without you in it….
